Come walk with us!

Gowlland TodIf you are among the growing number who believe that regular outdoor activity in congenial company can improve one’s health, fitness and quality of life, then we invite you to walk with the Garden City Wanderers Volkssport Club (GCW).

We offer a variety of walks throughout Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.  Our walks include parks, forests, urban streets and trails, and glorious ocean views. We invite walkers of all ages to join us on a walk. New members are welcome, but membership is not mandatory in order to join one of our walks. We'd love to meet you! And your first five walks are free! After that the cost is just $1 or $2 per walk.

Most of our walks are 10 kilometres in length and take between 1 1/2 and 2 hours. Walkers are encouraged to walk at their own pace—this is not a competition! In addition, shorter walks of 5-7 kilometres are usually available. Occasionally, longer distance walks, cross country skiing or snowshoeing events are offered.

Explore this website to learn more about us and all of our walks.

Garden City Wanderers' 25th anniversary year runs from January 31 2015 until January 30 2016. The celebrations began with a walk in Oak Bay starting at Willows Beach on January 31, 2015.   Over 50 walkers attended, including Ethel Hansen, CVF President. Everyone received a special pen with “Garden City Wanderers 25th Anniversary” printed on it.  A handout entitled “25 Facts” was available – listing 25 interesting tidbits of memorabilia.  The final touch for this day was an anniversary cake.

committeeThe 25th Anniversary Committee, Karen, Joan, Kaye, Brenda and Ada, between them have well over 100 years of membership and countless years of service to the club and to Volkssporting. They have worked hard over the winter to plan a year of fun, challenges and surprises to celebrate this great milestone in the club's history.

photo displayOur club’s major event of the year is WALKfest which was held on June 13, 2015.  On display was a picture gallery with pictures from 1990 to 2015.  Thanks to Brenda, a special souvenir copy of Footnotes, the club newsletter, was distributed detailing the 25 year history of Garden City Wanderers. 6 of the 7 people who have been president of the club were able to attend WALKfest. A special song was composed by Karen and a trivia quiz was prepared by Joan.  Many people volunteered to assist with registration, checkpoints, marking and many other things, and more than 60 attendees enjoyed the beautiful walks in splendid weather. And, as usual, the food  was delicious.

The year will end on January 30, 2016 with another walk in Oak Bay followed by a cake plus a prize draw for everyone who did 25 walks during the anniversary year.
